This indenture made the 19th day of June 1871 Between J G Runion overseer pf the poor for
Franklin Township in the county of Rockigham of the one part and J H Detamore of the other
part Witnesseth that the said overseers of the poor by virtue of an order of the county court made
at the June court in the year 2872 has placed and bound and by these presents doth place and
bind Daniel Franklin Detamore of the age of 15 years Son of Margaret J Detamore to be an
apprentice with him the said J H Detamore to dwell form the date of these present until the said
Daniel Franklin Detamore shall arrive at the age of twenty one years of age according to the act
of the General Assembly in that case made and provided for and during all which time and term
the said Daniel Franklin Detamore shall the said J H Detamore well and faithfully serve in all
such lawful business as the said D F Detamore shall be out unto by said J H Detamore according
to the power wit and ability of the said D F Detamore and the said D F Detamore honestly and
obediently in all things behave towards the said J H Detamore and honestly and obediently
towards the rest of the family of him the said J H Detamore. And the said J H Detamore for
himself executors and administrators doth hereby promise and covenant to and with the said
overseer of the poor and his successors in office for the time being that the said apprentice shall
be instructed in the craft and occupation of farming which he the said J H Detamore now useth
after the best manner that he can or may teach instruct and inform or to be taught instruct and
infored as much as thereunto belongeth or in any wise assertaineth and that the said J H
Detamore shall also find and allow unto the said D F Detamore sufficient meat drink apparel
washing lodging and all other things needful or nec for an apprentice during the term aforesaid.
And will moreover pay to the said D F Detamore the sum of one hundred dollars at the
expiration of the aforesaid term.
In witness where the parties to these presents have interchangeably set their hands and seals the
day and year above written.

Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well. This indenture made this 5th day of October in the year of our Lord 1847 between Jacob Trumbo
overseer of the poor of Brocks Gap district in the county of Rockingham of the one part and
William Weaver of the said county of the other part witnesseth that the said Jacob Trumbo
overseer of the poor as aforesaid by virtue of an order of the of the court of the aforesaid county
baring date May court in the year 1847 have put placed and bound and by these presents do put
place and bind Levi Peck of the age of 8 years old the 8th of March last to learn the business of a
farmer with him the said William Weaver to dwell from the date of these presents until the said
Levi Peck shall come to the age of 21 years according to the act of the General Assembly in that
case made and provided By and during all which time and term the Levi Peck shall the William
Weaver his said master well and faithfully serve in all such lawful business as the said Levi Peck
shall be put unto by his said master according to the power wit and ability of him the said Levi
Peck and honestly and obediently in all things shall behave himself towards his said master and
honestly and orderly towards the rest of the family of the said William Weaver And the said
William Weaver for his part for himself his executors and administrators doth hereby promise
and covenant to and with the said overseer of the poor and every of them their and every of their
executors and administrators and their and every of their successors for the time being and to and
with the said Levi Peck in the draft mistery and occupation of a farmer which he the said
William Weaver now useth after the best manner that he can or may teach instruct and inform or
cause to be taught instructed or informed as much as there unto belongeth or in any wise
assertaineth And that the said William Weaver shall also find and allow unto the said Levi Peck
sufficient meat drink apparel washing lodging and all other things needful or nect for a farmer
during the term aforesaid and I William Weaver bind myself to pay the mother of the said boy $2
a year until he arrives to the age of 20 and then $20 to the said boy when he arrives at the age of
21 years as the law directs
