An account of the resource
Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well. This indenture made the 25th day of Feb 1820 between John Coffman overseer of the poor in the
county of Rockingham and commonwealth of Virginia of the one part and Abraham Knave of
the county and commonwealth aforesaid of the other part, Witnesseth that John Coffman
Overseer of the poor as aforesaid by virtue of an order of county of Rockingham bearing date
November term 1819 have placed and bound and by these presents do put place and bind James
Lowry a free boy of colour of the age of 16 years the 19th day of October last to be an apprentice
with him the said Abraham knave to dwell from the date of these presents until the said James
Lowry shall come to the age of Twenty one years according to the act of the General Assembly
in that case made and provided by and during all which time and term the said James Lowry
shall the said Abraham Knave his said master well and faithfully serve in all such lawful
business as the said James Lowry shall be put unto by his said master according to the power wit
and ability of him the said James Lowry and honestly and obediently in all things shall behave
himself towards his said master and honestly and orderly towards the rest of the family of the
said Abraham Knave and the said Abraham Knave for his part for himself his Ex. And
Administrators doth hereby promise and covenant to and with the overseer of the poor and every
of them their and every of their Ex and Adm and their and every of their successors for the time
being and to and with the said James Lowry that he the said Abraham Knave shall the said James
Lowry in the craft mystery and occupation of a Blacksmith which he the said Abraham Knave
now useth after the best manner that he can or may teach instruct and inform or cause to be
taught instructed or informed as much as there unto belongeth or in any wise assertaineth and
that the said Abraham Knave shall find and allow unto the said apprentice sufficient meat, drink,
apparel, washing, lodging, and all the things needful for an apprentice during the term aforesaid
and also that the said Abraham Knave shall moreover pay to the said James Lowry the sum of
twenty dollars at the expiration of his aforesaid term as his freedom dues in Witness whereof the

This indenture made the twentieth day of January one thousand eight hundred and twenty
between Aaron Solomon one of the overseers of the poor for the west district of Rockingham
County of the one part and William Sprinkle of the county aforesaid of the other part witnesseth.
That pursuant to an order of the last November court the said Solomon doth put and bind George
Hively Orphan of Abraham Hively dec’d apprentice to the said William Sprinkle with him to
dwell and serve after the manner of an apprentice until he shall arrive to the age of twenty one
years, that said George being fifteen years old the thirteenth day of October last; who is truly and
faithfully to serve the said Sprinkle during said term; and to learn the art trade and mystery of a
wheelwright In consideration of which the said Sprinkle doth bind himself to the said Solomon
or to his successors overseer of the poor to teach or cause to be taught the said George Hively the
art trade or mystery of a wheelwright during said term And moreover to find the said George in
good and sufficient clothing, meat, drink, washing, and lodging fit and convenient for such an
apprentice during said term and also to teach or cause to be taught the said George Hively to read
English correctly, to write a good fair hand and arithmetic including the single rule of three and
at the end of his service shall pay and satisfy to the said George twenty dollars that being the
freedom dues allowed by the court In witness whereof the overseers of the poor aforesaid hath
hereunto set his hand and seal and the said Sprinkle hath set his hand and seal the day above

This indenture made the 29th day of August in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred
and ten by and between Joseph Cravens overseer of the poor for the county of Rockingham of
the one part and Samuel Chandler of said county witnesseth that the said Joseph Cravens
overseer of the poor as aforesaid by an order from the court of the aforesaid county [illegible]
November court 1806 hath put placed and bond Eli Harry of the age of to be an apprentice with
him the said Samuel Chandler to dwell from the date of these presents until the said Eli Harry
shall come to the age of twenty one years during all which time the said Eli Harry shall his said
master Samuel Chandler well and truly serve in all such lawfull business as shall be put to him
by his said master according to wit and ability of him the said Eli Harry and honestly and
obediently behave himself towards his master and honestly and orderly towards the rest of the
family of the said Samuel Chandler. And the said Samuel Chandler on his part doth hereby
promise and covenant to and with the said overseer of the poor that the said Samuel Chandler
shall the said Eli Henry teach the art or mystery of sadle makin which the said Samuel Chandler

An account of the resource
Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well. This indenture made the 3rd day of March 1820 between Joseph Fawcett one of the overseers of
the poor for the town district in the county of Rockingham of the one part and Daniel Wise of the
commonwealth of Virginia and county of Rockingham of the other part witnesseth that the said
Joseph Fawcett pursuant to an order of this Rockingham court held in February last doth put and
bind Richard Brown child of Nancy Brown apprentice to the said Daniel Wise with him to dwell
and serve after the manner of an apprentice until he shall arrive to the age of twenty one years
the 3rd, Richard Brown being five years old next July who is truly and faithfully to serve the said
Daniel Wise during said term and to learn the art and trade of a farmer. In consideration of which
the said Daniel wise doth bind himself to the said Joseph Fawcett and his successor overseers of
the poor to teach or cause to be taught the said Richard Brown the art trade and mistery of a
farmer according to law and more over to find the said Richard in good and sufficient clothing,
meat, drink, washing, and lodging fit and convenient for such an apprentice during said terms,
and also to teach or cause to be taught the Richard Brown to read English correctly, to write a
good fair hand and arithmetic including the single rule pf three and at the end of his service shall
pay satisfy to the said Richard twenty dollars that being the amount allowed by the said court.
In testimony whereof the overseers of the poor aforesaid and the said Daniel Wise have set their
hands and seals the day and year above written

This indenture made the thirteenth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred and nineteen between Aaron Solomon one of the overseers of the poor for the northwest
district of Rockingham County of the one part and Peter Blawser Jun. of the aforesaid county of
the other part witnesseth, that the said overseer of the poor in pursuance of an order of the court
of the county aforesaid held in this month, doth put and bind Adam Welch orphan of
Fourteen
years old on the twenty fifth day of December last as an apprentice to the said Peter Blawser Jun
with him to dwell and serve after the manner of an apprentice until he shall arrive to the age of
twenty one years. In consideration of which the said Peter Blawser Jun binds himself his heirs
executors or administrators to the said Solomon or his successor overseer of the poor to teach or
instruct or cause to be taught or instructed the said Adam in the art trade or mystery of a wagonmaker during said term and moreover to find him in good and sufficient clothing, meat, drink,
washing, and lodging fit and convenient for such an apprentice during said term and at the end of
his service shall pay and satisfy to the said Adam Welch twenty dollars, that being the freedom
dues allowed by the court.
And further the said Blawser binds himself to the said Solomon or to his successor overseer of
the poor to give to the said Adam Welch three months schooling in the time of his
apprenticeship, and at the end there of

This indenture made this ninth day of January one thousand eight hundred and nineteen between
Aaron Solomon one of the overseers of the poor for the west district of Rockingham county of
the one part and John Burkholder of the county aforesaid of the other part witnesseth. That
pursuant to an order of the court of the county aforesaid held at the December term last doth put
and bind David Shutter nine years old the twentieth day of December last past to the said John
Burkholder as an apprentice with him to dwell and serve until he shall arrive to the age of twenty
one years, to learn the art trade and mystery of a cooper. In consideration of which the said John
Burkholder binds himself his heirs executors and administrators to the said Solomon or his
successors overseers of the poor to teach or instruct or cause to be taught or instructed the said
David Shutter the art trade and mystery of a cooper during said term and more over to find the
said David Shutter in good sufficient cloathing, meat, drink, washing and lodging fit and
convenient for such an apprentice.
And also to teach or cause to be taught the said Shutter to read English correctly, to write a good
fair hand and arithmetic through the single rule of three during the time of his apprenticeship,
and at the end of his service shall pay and satisfy to the said Shutter twenty dollars, that being the
freedom dues allowed by the court. And further the said Burkholder agrees with the said
Solomon to pay or cause to be paid out of his estate to the said Shutter additional sum of thirty
dollars.
In witness whereof the overseer of the poor aforesaid hath hereunto set his hand and seal, and the
said Burkholder hath set his hands and seal the day above written.

This indenture made this tenth day of July 1819 between Stephen Harnsberger overseer of the
poor of the county of Rockingham of the one part and Thomas Frame of the said county of the
other part. Witnesseth that the said Stephen Harnsberger overseer of the poor as aforesaid, by
virtue of an order of the aforesaid county bearing date September court 1818 have put placed and
bound and by these presents doth put place and bind Jacob Pool orphan of Rice Pool of the age
of 12 years the 10th day of December 1818 to dwell from this date until the said Jacob Pool shall
come to the age of 21 years according to the act of the general assembly in that care provided.
During which term of time the said Jacob Pool shall well and faithfully serve the said Frame and
shall honestly and obediently behave himself towards the rest of the family of the said Thomas
Frame, who on his part doth for himself and his executors and administrators promise and
covenant with aforesaid overseer of the poor and his successors and successors for the time being
to and with the said Jacob Pool have him taught the craft and art of tanning and currying and all
that thereunto belongeth after the best manner he can be taught. And that the said Thomas Frame
shall find and allow him sufficient meat, drink, apparel, washing, lodging and all other things
needful for him during his said term of time aforesaid. And also that the said Thomas Frame
shall cause to be taught to the said Jacob Pool reading writing and arithmetic including the the
single rule of three. And will moreover pay to Jacob Pool the sum of twenty dollars at the
expiration of the aforesaid term. In witness whereof the parties to these presents interchangeably
set their hands and seals this day and year first above written.

This indenture made the first day of May 1819 between Stephen Harnsbarger an overseer of the

This indenture made the thirty first day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred and nineteen between Aaron Solomon one of the overseers of the poor for the west
district of Rockingham County of the one part and Samuel Kline of the county aforesaid of the
other part witnesseth.
That the said overseer of poor in pursuance to an order of the court of the county aforesaid held
at the last June term, doth put and bind Thomas Glass (orphan of Robert Glass) seven years old
the fourteenth day of last month, as an apprentice to Samuel Kline; with him to dwell and serve
until he shall arrive to the aide of twenty one years: to learn the art trade and mystery of a shoe
maker. In consideration of which the said Kline binds himself his heirs executors administrators,
to the said Solomon or his successors overseers of the poor to teach or instruct or cause to be
taught or instructed the said Thomas Glass in trade and mystery of a shoe maker during said
term. And more over to find the said Thomas in good and sufficient clothing, meat, drink,
washing and lodging fit and convenient for such an apprentice during the time of his
apprenticeship. And also to teach or instruct or cause to be taught or instructed the said Thomas
Glass to read English correctly, to write a good fair hand and arithmetic through the single rile of
three. And at the end of his service shall pay and satisfy to the said Thomas Glass twenty dollars
that ending the freedom dues allowed by the court.
In witness whereof the overseer of the poor aforesaid hath hereunto set his hand and seal and the
said Samuel Kline hath set his hand and seal the day above written.

This indenture made the 21 st day of December in the year 1819 between William Crawford one
of the overseers of the poor for the county of Rockingham of the one part and Isaac Cowgill of
the said county of the other part witnesseth that the said William Crawford overseer of the poor
as aforesaid in pursuance of an order of the county court of Rockingham made at April court
1819 doth put and bind Henry Davidson (orphan of Thomas Davidson dec’d) of said county who
was 12 years of age on the 16th day of December 1818 as apprentice to the said Isaac Cowgill
with him after the manner of an apprentice to dwell and serve until he shall arrive at the age of
twenty one years to learn the art trade and mystery of a blacksmith. In consideration of which the
said Isaac Cowgill binds himself to the said William Crawford or his successors overseers of the

This indenture made the 21 st day of September 1819 between Peter Nicholas overseer of the poor
in the county of Rockingham of the one part and Charles Hederick of the said county of the other
part witnesseth that the said Peter Nicholas overseer of the poor as aforesaid hath, in conformity

do put, place, and bind Jacob Brown a bastard child of Caty Stikeleather whose parent is not able
to maintain him who is now about six years of age to be an apprentice to him the said Charles

Jacob Brown shall the said Charles Hederick well and truly serve in all such lawfull business as

overseers of the poor for the west district of the county of Rockingham of the one part and
Malchia Brannaman of the county aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said overseer of

court 1814 doth put and bind Elizabeth Strough poor child of Jacob Strough four years old the 4th

This indenture made this seventh day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred and eighteen between Aaron Solomon one of the overseers of the poor for the west
district of Rockingham county of the one part and Joseph Huddle of the county aforesaid of the
other part witnesseth. That the said overseer of the poor pursuant to an order of the court of the
county aforesaid held at the last January term doth put and bind Sarah Stout poor child of
Rebecca Stout nine years old on the first day of January last, as an apprentice to Joseph Huddle,
with him to dwell and serve after the manner of an apprentice, until she shall arrive to the age of
eighteen years, to learn the art and mystery of housewifery that is to say the said Huddle is to
teach or cause to be taught the said Sarah cooking, spinning, knitting, and sewing during said
term and also to teach or cause her to be taught English reading correctly and to write a good fair
hand during said term. In consideration of which the said Huddle doth bind himself to the said
Solomon or to his successor overseer of the poor. And moreover he is to find the said Sarah in
good sufficient cloathing, meat, drink, washing and lodging during the said term fit and
convenient for such an apprentice. And at the end of her service shall pay and satisfy to the said
Sarah Stout a bed and furniture, with an extra suit of cloathes the whole to be worth thirty five
dollars being the freedom dues allowed by the court
In witness whereof the said overseer of the poor aforesaid hath hereunto set his hand seal, and
the said Huddle hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day above written.

Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well. This indenture made the 11th day of April 1818 between Richard P Fletcher one of the overseers
of the poor for the west district of County of Rockingham in the state of Virginia of the one part
and Adam Fisher of the county and state aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the overseer
of the poor on pursuance of an order of the court of said county bearing date at March court 1811
doth put and bind Michael Synder orphan of Jacob Snyder deceased (who will be 21 years of age
on the 14th day of October next) as an apprentice to him the said Adam Fisher with him the said
Adam Fisher after the manner of an apprentice to dwell and serve until he shall arrive at the age
of twenty one years to learn the art trade and mystery of a Hatter in all its various branches
during which all his lawful commands and honestly and obediently in all things shall behave
himself towards his said master and the said Adam Fisher for his part doth hereby covenant and
promise to and with the said Richard P Fletcher or his successors in office to teach or cause to be
taught or instructed the said Michael Synder reading writing and arithmetic through the single
rule of three and the art mystery and trade as aforesaid during said term and more over to find the
said Michel Synder in good sufficient clothing meat drink washing and lodging fit and
convenient for said apprentice and also at the end of said time to pay to the said Michael Synder
for freedom dues fifteen dollars. In witness whereof the said overseer of the poor and Adam
Fisher hath here unto set their hands and seals on the day and years above written

This indenture made this 16th day of April one thousand eight hundred and eighteen between
Philip Braner overseer of the poor for the North district in the county of Rockingham of the one
part and John Shaver of the said county of the other part witnesseth that the said overseer of the
poor in pursuance of an order of the court of the said county of Rockingham bearing date last
court do put and bind William Poole of the said county fourteen years of age the fifteen day of
May next as apprentice to the said John Shaver with him after the manner of an apprentice to
dwell and serve until he shall drive to the age of twenty one years to learn the art and mystery of
shoemaking
In consideration of which the said John Shaver binds himself to the Philip Braner or his
successor overseers of the poor to teach and instruct or cause to be taught and instructed the said
William Pool the art and mystery aforesaid during said term and moreover to find the said Pool
in goods and sufficient clothes meat drink washing and lodging fit and convenient or such
apprentice and teach him to read write and common arithmetic including the rule of three and
also at the end of his service shall pay and satisfy to the said pool all such freedom dues as he
shall have a right to demand In witness whereof the said overseer of the poor to the counter part
of these presents hath set his hand and affixed his seal and the said Shaver hath set his hand and
affixed his seal the said and year above writton
