In the Circuit Court of said County:
The grand jurors in and for the body of the said County of
Rockingham and now attending said court at its Deoember term, 1931
upon their oaths do present that E. C. Freeze, who was heretofore
oonvic.ted of violating the Prohibition laws of the Commonweal th or
Virginia on May 17, 1930, in the Justice's court of said County,
before J.C. Staples, Justice of the ~eace, and who then and there
was sentenced to pay a fine of five dollars and serve for a period
of three months in lfail, did, within one year next prior to the
finding of this indictment, on or about November 7, 1931, in said
County, unlawfully an& feleniettel~ have in his possession about
eight p ints of ardent spirits (moonshine liquor), against the
peace and dignity of tpe Commonwealth of Virginia.

the Magistrate shall fix a time not less than 10
nor more th a n 30 d ays from the date of return,
for th e hearing of said return. If n o claimant
ap.p ea r, the Arde nt Spirits and articles are to b e
forfe ite d to Commonwealth. Any person claiming any of same must file a written claim stating
particularly the character and extent of his inter es t there in, whereupon the Magistrate shall
ce rtify the warrant, written claim and articles
claimed, to the Circuit or Corporation Court, as
the case m ay be, for determination, and declare
the unclaimed articles forfeited .
2. If still, still cap, worm, tubs, heater. fermenters,
or a ny appliance connected with a still and used,
or m a sh or o ther s ub stance capable of being used , in th e m a nufacture of Ardent Spirits, be
seized, th e m as h (after taking a sa mple) shall be
destroy ed, and th e fac ts and articles seized reported to the Prohibition Commissioner and
Commo nwe alth's Attorney.

The grand jurors in and for the body of said
County of Rockingham, and now attending said court at
its April term, 1931, upon their oaths do present, that
Ethel Breeden, on or about April 1, 1931, in said
County, did unlawfullyhav e in her possession about

The first series of the Prohibition Records collection consists of all criminal case records associated with cases brought to the <strong>Rockingham County Circuit Court</strong> from 1916-1964. Not every individual was indicted for a criminal offense and many were simply judged as misdemeanors. The cases have been separated and arranged by the last name of the defendant. <br /><br />For more information on the Prohibition collection, visit the "<a href="https://omeka.lib.jmu.edu/erp/findingaids">Finding Aids</a>" tab in the menu above.
