On or about December 2, 1947, Roy Edward Coffman gave Lucille Randall $20
and placed her on a train in Elkton, Virginia,
bound for Front Royal, Virgirn..a. Later Roy joined Lucille in Front Royal and they made their home
with Gladys Williams as man and wife.
Wm.le the couple were staying in
this home, police officials
were attempting
to locate the two •. On one
occasion the police called at the Williams' home and ask for Lucille Randall.
Mrs. Williams stated that the girl had been there but left a few days ago
and she did not know of her whereabouts.
Hmvever, Lucille was in the home
at this time.
A few days after this event the couple moved to Daniels,
:Maryland where they lived with Charles Evans. While here, Coffman took
employment with a local cotton mill.
The two lived with Evans a few months
and then moved to Margaret Via's home for a few months.
Later they made
their home vr.ith Benny Shifflett.
It seems as if Coffman was afraid to stay
in one place for a long period of time.
Later they left Daniels, Maryland,
and moved to Wallay Ford, West Virginia.
Here the two made their home with
the defendant 1 s uncle, Herman Morris.
This situation
was unsettled
and they
finally
located themselves in a small mountain shack near Spring Gap, West
Virginia.
Lucille Randall claims that she ran away with Coffman because
he promised to marry her.
However, the marriage did not materialize
even
though a child was born on January 1, 1949. While away from this area,
Lucille vr.rote her parents on various occasions stating
that she and Roy
were happily married and getting along well.
Dtir...ng the Easter weekend
of 1949, the couple caine within four miles of the Randall home in Grottoes
but did not call on Lucille's
parents because Roy's people had infomed
them that the girl was going to be placed in a reform school.
At this time
the Randall's
had consoled themselves with the idea that their daughter
was happily married.
On May 14, 1949, Mr. Randall located
bis daughter
and persuaded her and the would-be-l:msband to return to Grottoes.
The
couple then moved in with the Randall family in their home but soon the
elders became suspicious
of their not being married and took the matter
up with the Commomrealth's Attorney.
Coffman maintains that he wanted to
marry Lucille but feared he would get into difficulties
if he tried to do
so in other states.
He stated that he still
wished to marry the girl but
cannot gain the consent of the Randall family.
Coffman further claims
that he took the girl because her parents were cruel to her, they had
encouraged her to date him., and that Lucille feared she was pregnant by
him and did not wish to confront her parents with this fact.

N:
1947, Roy Coffman lured Lucille Randall away from the home
of her parents with the promise of marriage.
Obviously he was not serious
about the promise since he did not marry the fifteen-year
old girl during
the eighteen months that he lived with her.
During the period of time
they were living together,
Coffman kept constantly
on the move so as to
avoid any contact with the law. He is now the father of one child by
Lucille Randall and admits that she is to have a second one by him sometime in the early fall.
Roy Coffman was born in Washingtonville,
Ohio,
however, he lived the larger part of his life in Grottoes,
Virginia.
He married Mary Elizabeth Morris in 1935 and by her had +ro children
who are now twelve and six years of age. His wife die.d in 1945 and since
that time he and the children have lived with Margaret Cof
oac1.
The people of Grottoes give the subject a favorable
reputation
as an
employee and could not recall of his ever being in any difficulties.
No criminal record was established
through the court records of Rockingham County except for a misdemeanor charge.
The subject completed the
first
year of hie;h school w.ith little
difficulty.
He is not a church
member and his general attitude
does not establish
him as being religiously
inclined.
He has worked for short periods of time for many of the local
industries
and claims to have never been fired from a job.
He appears
to be in a good state of health.
On December 2,
No plan or recommendation
is offered

Respectfully
at this
time.

The cases have been separated and arranged by the last name of the defendant. <br /><br />For more information on the Prohibition collection, visit the "<a href="https://omeka.lib.jmu.edu/erp/findingaids">Finding Aids</a>" tab in the menu above.

Overseers of the Poor: Indentures of Apprenticeship
Description
An account of the resource
Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well. Active labor and semi-skilled artisan positions were reserved for males, while females often served their term learning to sew, spin, knit, or domestic labor.<br /><br />For more information on the Overseers of the Poor collection, visit the "<a href="https://omeka.lib.jmu.edu/erp/findingaids">Finding Aid</a>" tab in the menu above.
