My name is Leslie Cook. My address is Star Route,
I am 15 years of age.
Born - December 29, 19950
Hinton,
Va.
I have been told that I need not make this statement unless
I desire to do so; that everything
I say must be of my own freewill,
and that anything I say can be and will be used against me in a
criminal prosecution.
I have also been told that I am entitled
to
counsel.
Nevertheless,
I do make the following statement voluntarily
this 19th day of January, 1961, in the office of the CommonwEB.th's
Attorney,
Court House, Harrisonburg,
Virginia,
in the presence of the
Commonwealth's Attorney James R. Sipe and Deputy Sheriffs
T. L. Martin
and Go Mo Wilcox.
About December 31, 1960, Nelson Ringgold and myself broke into
the Mt. Clinton schoolhouse.
I believe it was somewhere around 9:00
or 10:00 at night when we broke into this building.
We were riding
in Stanley Ringgold's
car that night and Nelson Ringgold was driving.
We broke into the building by breaking a window located in the basement
door and then reaching inside and unlocking the door.
After we got
in the bu:iliing we took some chocolate milk from the refrigerator,
softballs,
softball
bats and two jackets.
We found these jackets
and balls and
bats in a closet next to the principal's
office.
I have one of the
softball's
and softball
bats at my house and I burnt up one jadet .
Nelson Ringgold took the other jacket and one softball
and one bat.
I don't know what he has done with them.
A little
over a week ago, a proximately
January 8, 1961, Alton
May, Gerald Sharp, Mickey Minnick, Russell Rhinehart,
Jessie Via,
Richard Hendricks and myself went to Galen Gupp's service station
sometime early that night.
We were in Alton May's car.
Alton May and
Mickey Minnick stayed in the car and drove up the road and waited for
us.
The rest of us got out of the car at Cupp's service station.
Jessie Via and myself broke into the service station by breaking a
window on the side of the building
and crawling into the building
and
then breaking a door inside the building.
Gerald Sb~rp, Richard
Hendrick and Russell Rhinehart
stayed outside and kept a lookout for us
and after we got something inside we handed it out the window to them.
We got some cigarettes,
bologna, bread, candy, soft drinks and some
money. We then got in the car and divided up the loot.
After we
broke into Cupp's service station
we later went to the Montezuma Garage.
All of us were there except Mickey Minnick who we had taken home.
Gerald Sharp and myself broke into the garage using a skeleton key on
the back door.
The others stayed in the car and kept a lookout for
us and after we took some 022 shells,
shotgun shells,
a quart of oil
and some money, we took it back to the car and we divided this.
About the middle of November, 1960, Gerald Sharp and myself
broke into a cabin towards Rawley which is owned by Dennis Trobaugh.
We walked nhere from my home and broke a window to gain entrance
to
the cabin.
We took some candy and some knives from the cabin.
I
tlirew • the knives away latter.
Rhinehart,
Sometime about November 8, 1960, Nelson Ringgold, Russell
Gerald Sharp and myself broke into Glen Eavers grocery store.

- 2 -
I was driving Stanley Ringgold's
car.
Nelson Ringgold, Russell
Rhinehart and G~rald Sharp broke into this store while I drove the
car on up the road.
I came back and picked them up and I know they
had some change with them that they had taken from the store.
Montevideo.
therein
I have also tried to break in a service station
at
Nelson Ringgold was with me and we could not get in.
I have read the above statement and the facts stated
are true and correct
to the best of my knowledge.

Description
An account of the resource
The first series of the Prohibition Records collection consists of all criminal case records associated with cases brought to the <strong>Rockingham County Circuit Court</strong> from 1916-1964. An account of the resource
The first series of <span>the SNP Records collection consists of 4,756 documents related to The State Commission on Conservation and Development of the State of Virginia v. Cassandra Lawson Atkins and others, and Fifty-Two Thousand Five Hundred and Sixty-One (52,561) Acres of Land, more or less in Rockingham County, Virginia, court case initiated by the state of Virginia in order to acquire 52,561 acres of privately held land located within the northern Blue Ridge Mountains. </span> The Virginia government in collaboration with the federal government, used condemnation, a process that involves the seizure of an individual's private property for public use, without the owner’s consent, but with payment of compensation, and more formally known as “eminent domain,” to create the Shenandoah National Park. The documents within the collection almost entirely refer to land located within Rockingham County, but other counties within the park’s scope followed a similar process to acquire the land. The documents are broken up into three categories: Deed Books, Miscellaneous Documents, and Condemnation Cases. This collection contains the Condemnation Cases.<br /><br />For more information on the Rockingham County Shenandoah National Park collection, visit the "<a href="https://omeka.lib.jmu.edu/erp/findingaids">Finding Aids</a>" tab in the menu above.<br /><br />I<span>n the 1970s and 1980s many of the individuals displaced by the park creation were interviewed in hopes of preserving their stories.
