119 North Main St.,
age.
Bridgewater,

I am ----20

I have been told that I need not make this statement
unless I desire to do so; that everything
I say must be of my own
freewill,
and that anything I say can be and will be used against
me in a criminal
prosecution.
I have also been told that I am
entitled
to counsel.
Nevertheless,
I do make the following
statement voluntarily
this
14th day of July, 1961, in the office
of the Commonwealth's Attorney,
Court House, Harrisonburg,
Virginia,
in the presence of Commonwealth's Attorney James R. Sipe
Deputy Sheriff G. M. Wilcox and Chief of Police E. E. Harrison of
Bridgewater,
Virginia.
Last night, July 13, 1961, I went to the lawn party in
Bridgewater.
I first went down to the lawn party about 8:30 or
9:00 P.M. After I got to the lawn party I saw several of my
friends,
who were Donnie Andrews, Bob Neil and Dennis Propst.
While I was there at the lawn party I noticed Dennis Propst and
Bob Neil playing bingo and a young girl,
Betsy Whetzel, was sittin
next to them.
I did not know Betsy although I might have seen her
around Bridgewater before.
Dennis Propst and Bob Neil told me and Donnie that they
were going to take Betsy for a ride.
They borrowed Donnie
Andrew's car and took Betsy for a ride.
They were gone approximat
one-half hour before they returned
to the lawn party.
When Dennis and Bob got back, Donnie and myself were
sitting
in my car which is a 1949 Ford.
Donnie and myself saw
Betsy Whetzel get out of the car and go back into the lawn party,
then Bob Neil saw Donnie and myself in my car and came over and
said that they were going to take her out again.to
get some. I
told Bob Neil that I would follow them in my car.
Bob and Dennis
then went back over to Donnie's car and Betsy got in the car with
them. Then either Bob or Dennis called for Donnie and myself
to come on and go in the car with them, and so we decided we would
all get into Dorrie's car and go together.
JAMES

Donnie Andrew's was driving his car and we drove down
to the river.
We drove around underq:ieath the bridge whish is
located on the south end of Bridgewater.
We then parked the car
and Dennis Propst and Betsy Whetzel got out of the car.
They
walked down by the river to some bushes.
They were gone about
15 or 20 minutes and then they came back to the car.
Donnie, Bob
and myself stayed in the car while they were gone.
After they
got back into the car, Betsy Whetzel said lets go some place else.
We then drove down the Mt. Crawford road, better known as the
airport
road and parked beside the road.
After we had parked,
Betsy Whetzel said "whose next".
Then one of us said asked Betsy
which one did she want, and she pointed to Donnie Andrews. Donnie
Andrews then told the rest of us to get out of the car, which we
did.
Bob Neil, Dennis and myself walked down the road a short
ly
- 2 distance.
We stayed there for about 5 or 10 minutes and then
Donnie yelled to us and asked us whether we were ready to go.
We then all got in the car and drove towards Bridgewater.
Betsy
Whetzel then said; "Well, there is two down and two to go".
I
believe Donnie was driving at this time and he turned the car
around and went back down to where we had parked on the airport
road.
As soon as we parked,the
other three boys got out of the
car.
Betsy Whetzel was already seated on the back seat and I got
out of the front and got in the back with her.
As soon as the
other boys had left and I had got in the back sea:, Betsy asked
me whether I was ready - and I told her I was. She then took off
her pants and I took off my pants and shorts.
Betsy Whetzel was
lying down on the back seat and I then had intercourse
with her.
I inserted
my penis into Betsy Whetzel a couple of inches.
I
could not get my penis all the way into her.
We had intercourse
for a couple minutes.
I then stopped and got off of her.
I then
put my clothes back on and Betsy Whetzel put her pants on. I
then called the other boys to come on back that I was through.
After the boys got back into the car, one of them told Bob Neil
that he was next, and he said no he wasn't.
Betsy Whetzel then
said to Donnie, lets go up on the hill,
but Donnie told her we
had better be getting back that it was time to go home. We then
drove back to where I had my car parked at the lawn party at
Bridgewater
and I got out.
I then drove on down to the fire
station
in Bridgewater.
Donnie drove up right after me and the
other two boys were with him. Donnie asked me where he could get
some gas and I told him that I thought the stations
were closed, b t
that he could take the other boys home in my car, which he did.
I took Donnie Andrews car and drove on home.
When I had intercourse
with Betsy, I did not use a
rubber.
It was probably sometime between 10:00 and 11:00 P.M.
last night when we had Betsy out in the car and had relations
with her.
therein
I have read the above statement and the facts stated
are true and correct
to the best of my knowledge.

July
20, 1961
I, Betsy Whetzel met Jackie Long on or about June 10,
1961, near my home on West View Street in the Town of Bridgewater,
Virginia.
We went for a walk.
We walked up on the levy and then
on upon the hill (Popes hill).
We sat down close to some rocks,
he asked me how old I was and I told him I was eleven (11) years
old.
We were sitting
there awhile and he asked me to take off
my clothes.
I said I wouldn't and he said he guess he would have
to take them off.
He took off my black and white slacks and my
underpants.
Jackie had pushed me down on the ground and forced
me to have intercourse
with him. We had intercourse
for two or
three minutes.
He held me down on the ground.
I could not get

After he quite,

Description
An account of the resource
The first series of the Prohibition Records collection consists of all criminal case records associated with cases brought to the Rockingham County Circuit Court from 1916-1964.
