This indenture made the 6th day of November in the year of our Lord 1843 Between Jacob
Trumbo one of the overseers of the poor of the district in the county of Rockingham of the one
part and John Chrisman of the other part witnesseth that the said overseer of the poor by virtue of
an order of the county aforesaid bearing date October court in the year 1843 has placed and
bound and by these presents doth place and bind Elizabeth Lewis a free child of callaur of the
age of thirteen years to be an apprentice with him the said John Chrisman and as an apprentice
with him the said John Chrisman to dwell from the date of these presents until the said Elizabeth
Lewis shall arrive and come to the age of eighteen years according to the act of the General
Assembly in that case made and provided. For and during all which time and term the said
Elisabeth Lewis shall the said John Chrisman well and faithfully serve in all such lawfull
business as the said Elizabeth Lewis shall be out unto by said John Chrisman according to the
power wit and ability of the said Elizabeth Lewis and the said Elizabeth Lewis honestly and
obediently in all things behave towards the said John Chrisman and honestly and orderly towards
the rest of the family of him the said John Chrisman and the said John Chrisman doth bind
himself his heirs executors and c to learn the said Elizabeth Lewis the house hold business and
shall also find and allow unto the said apprentice sufficient meat drink apparel washing and
lodging during the said term and moreover to pay to Polly Lewis her mother two dollars per year
and pay to the said Elizabeth Lewis the sum of ten dollars at the expiration of the aforesaid term

Description
An account of the resource
Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well.
