Virginia, in the sum of Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00), to be
paid to the said Cotmnonwealth, its certain attorneys, executors,
administrators,or assigns, . for the true payment whereof we bind
ourselves, our heirs, executors, administrators, firmly by these
presents.
Sealed with our seals and dated this 4th day of Karch,
in the year of 1927.
The condition of the above obligation is su&h that whereas
the ea.id Howard C. Criddle has been arrested upon a warrant,
charging him with the violation of the prbhibition law of Virginia,
and whereas he has waived a preliminary hearing upon said warrant.,
NOW, THEREFORE, if the said Howard C. Criddle shall well
and truly appe~ before the Circuit Court of Rockingham County,
on the first day of the next term thereof, to answer an indictment,

The first series of the Prohibition Records collection consists of all criminal case records associated with cases brought to the <strong>Rockingham County Circuit Court</strong> from 1916-1964. Not every individual was indicted for a criminal offense and many were simply judged as misdemeanors. Collection includes five letters, dated 1856 May 17 to 1858 October 7, from publishers Joseph Funk and Sons, of Mountain Valley, Va., to their book agent, James Curry of Nickell's Mill, Monroe County, Va. The letters discuss supply and demand, cost, production, and shipment of the work Harmonia Sacra, a popular Mennonite hymnbook written in shape-note style. Specific subjects mentioned include the need for a new fount of type, competition with northern publishers, carelessness of the depot agents in Staunton, Va., and the continuation of James Curry's agency.
