This indenture made the 21 st day of December in the year 1819 between William Crawford one
of the overseers of the poor for the county of Rockingham of the one part and Isaac Cowgill of
the said county of the other part witnesseth that the said William Crawford overseer of the poor
as aforesaid in pursuance of an order of the county court of Rockingham made at April court
1819 doth put and bind Henry Davidson (orphan of Thomas Davidson dec’d) of said county who
was 12 years of age on the 16th day of December 1818 as apprentice to the said Isaac Cowgill
with him after the manner of an apprentice to dwell and serve until he shall arrive at the age of
twenty one years to learn the art trade and mystery of a blacksmith. In consideration of which the
said Isaac Cowgill binds himself to the said William Crawford or his successors overseers of the
poor for said county to teach and instruct or cause to be taught and instructed the said Henry
Davidson in the mart and mystery of a blacksmith during his term of service and moreover to
find he said Henry Davidson in good and sufficient his term of service fit and convenient for an
apprentice and also to teach or cause him to be taught reading writing and common arithmetic
including the rule of three and also at the end of his service shall pay the said Henry Davidson
twenty dollars In witness whereof the said William Crawford and the said Isaac Cowgill have
hereunto set their hands and seals on the day and year first above written signed sealed and
delivered in the presence

An account of the resource
Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well.
