This indenture made the 29th day of August in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred
and ten by and between Joseph Cravens overseer of the poor for the county of Rockingham of
the one part and Samuel Chandler of said county witnesseth that the said Joseph Cravens
overseer of the poor as aforesaid by an order from the court of the aforesaid county [illegible]
November court 1806 hath put placed and bond Eli Harry of the age of to be an apprentice with
him the said Samuel Chandler to dwell from the date of these presents until the said Eli Harry
shall come to the age of twenty one years during all which time the said Eli Harry shall his said
master Samuel Chandler well and truly serve in all such lawfull business as shall be put to him
by his said master according to wit and ability of him the said Eli Harry and honestly and
obediently behave himself towards his master and honestly and orderly towards the rest of the
family of the said Samuel Chandler. And the said Samuel Chandler on his part doth hereby
promise and covenant to and with the said overseer of the poor that the said Samuel Chandler
shall the said Eli Henry teach the art or mystery of sadle makin which the said Samuel Chandler
now followeth in the best manner that he the said Samuel Chandler is capable of And also find
and allow unto the said apprentice sufficient meat drink washing lodging apperal and all other
things fiting for an apprentice to have during the aforesaid term And also that the said Samuel
Chandler shall teach or cause to be taught the said apprentice reading writing and common
arithmetic including the rule of three and will moreover pay into the said Eli Harry the sum of
twelve dollars at the expiration of his apprenticeship. In witness whereof the parties have set
their hands and seals the day and year above written

Description
An account of the resource
Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well.
