This indenture made the first day of May 1819 between Stephen Harnsbarger an overseer of the
poor of the county of Rockingham of the one part and David Lair of said county of the other part
Witnesseth that the said Stephen Harnsbarger overseer of the poor as aforesaid, by virtue of and
order of the court of the aforesaid county bearing date at the April court 1819 have put placed
and bound and by these presents do put place and bind Betsey Pool orphan of Price Pool of the
age of ten years old the 27th day of January 1818 to dwell from the date of these presents until
the said Betsey Pool Shall come to the age of eighteen years according to the act of the General
Assembly in that case provided. During which term of time the said Betey Pool shall well and
faithfully serve the said David lair according to the best of her ability and shall honestly and
obediently behave herself towards the rest of the family of the said David Lair, who on his part
doth for himself and his exrs and administrators promise and covenant with the aforesaid
overseer of the poor and his successors for the time being and to and with the said Betsy Pool
have her taught the craft and art of a spinster after the best manner she can be taught and all that
thereunto belongeth and that the said David Lair shall also find and allow her sufficient meat,
drink, apparel, washing, lodging, and all other things needful for her during the said term
aforesaid and also that the said David Lair shall teach or cause to be taught to the said Betsy Pool
reading and writing and will moreover pay to the said Betsy Pool the sum of twenty dollars at the
expiration of the aforesaid term in witness whereof the parties to these presents interchangeable
set their hands and seals this day and year first above.

Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well. This indenture made this this sixteenth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred and eight between John Krotzer one of the overseers of the poor in the county of
Rockingham of the one part and Ferdenand Lair of said county of the other part witnesseth that
the said John Krotzer an overseer of the poor as aforesaid By virtue of an order of court the
aforesaid county Bearing Date March fifteenth day in the year 1808 have put placed and bound
and by these presents do put place and bind Rachel Blizzard a poor girl whose parents are not
able to maintain her of the age of nine years and fifteen days to live and dwell with him the said
Ferdenand Lair from the date of these presents until the said Rachel Blizzard shall come to the
age of eighteen year according to the act of General Assembly in that case made and provided
By and during all which time and term the said Rachel Blizzard shall the said Ferdenand Lair her
said master well and faithfully serve in all such lawfull business as the said Rachel Blizzard shall
be put unto by her said master according to the power wit and ability of her the said Rachel
Blizzard and honestly and obediently in all things shall behave towards her said master and
honestly and orderly towards the rest of the family of the said Ferdenand Lair and the said
Ferdenand Lair for his part for himself his executors and administrators doth hereby promise and
covenant to and with the said overseer of the poor and his heirs executors and administrators and
successors for the time being and to and with the said Rachel Blizzard that he the said Ferdenand
Lair shall the said Rachel Blizzard in the craft mystery and occupation of sewing spinning nitting
after the best manner that he can or may teach instruct and inform or cause to be taught
instructed and informed as much as there to belongeth or in any wise assertaineth and that the
said Ferdenand Lair shall also find and allow unto the said Rachel Blizzard sufficient meat drink
apparel washing lodging and all other things needful during the term aforesaid and Also that the
said Ferdenand Lair shall teach or cause to be taught to the said Rachel Blizzard reading and
writing at the expiration of her aforesaid term the sum of twelve dollars

This indenture witnesseth that I John Lincoln one of the overseers of the poor, for the parish and
County of Rockingham in the state of Virginia, by an order of said county court to me directed,
held the fourth Monday of one thousand seven hundred and eighty nine, hath and by these
presents doth put and bind Jonas Painter, orphan of Elias Painter of the age of fifteen years the
first day of May last past apprentice to Ferdenand Lair of the same place to serve him in the said
county or parish until he arrives at the age of twenty one years, during which term, the said
apprentice his said master faithfully shall serve his secrets keep, his lawful commands every
where obey; he shall do no damage to his said master, nor willfully suffer it to be done by others;
he shall neither buy nor sell without his said masters leave; fornication he shall not commit,
matrimony he shall not contract, at cards, dice, or any other unlawful game, he shall play, with
his own goods or the goods of others, whereby his said master may have damage, nor haunt
alehouses, playhouses, or taverns; he shall not waste his said masters goods, nor lend them to any
without his consent but in all things behave himself a good and faithful servant or apprentice
ought to do.
In consideration whereof the said master shall provide and procure sufficient meat, drink,
washing, lodging, and apparel fitting for such apprentice, during the said term, and teach the said
apprentice to read the Bible well, to write and cypher through the rule of three, and learn him or
cause to be paid to said apprentice the freedom dues customary for such apprentice.
In witness whereof each partie bind themselves to the other. Sealed with their seals, this thirtieth
day of March one thousand seven hundred and ninety-two.
