t i me of seizure being occupied b y James Eldridge who had in said
ca r at ' the ti me of seizure about five gallons of ardent spirits,
That under Section 57 of the Prohibition Act as an ended,
said a utomobile i s forfeited to the Commonwea lth •

condemned and sold, and that t he proceeds be disposed of accordi ng to . l aw, and that James Eldridge and. Nettie Mason, as well as

The first series of the Prohibition Records collection consists of all criminal case records associated with cases brought to the <strong>Rockingham County Circuit Court</strong> from 1916-1964. Not every individual was indicted for a criminal offense and many were simply judged as misdemeanors. This indenture witnesseth that I Phillip Brenner one of the overseer of the poor of Rockingham
County Virginia pursuant to an order of court directed to an overseer of the poor, dated
December court 1815 do out and bind Catharine Mason a poor child of Mason born the 1st April
1811 apprentice to Frederick Long to learn her to knit sew and spin (and to give her for freedom
dues twenty dollars lawfull money to serve him until she arrives at the age of eighteen years,
during which time the said apprentice her said master faithfully shall serve his secret his secrets
keeps, his lawful commands every where obey, he shall do no damage to her said master, no
willfully suffer it to be done by others, she shall not absent herself day or night without her said
masters leave, but in all things behave herself as a good and faithful servant or apprentice out to
do in consideration whereof the said master shall provide and procure for said apprentice during
the said term sufficient meat, drink, washing, lodging and apparel sufficient for such apprentice
and teach the said apprentice to read the Bible well and write a tolerable hand, in witness
whereof each party bind themselves their heirs and successors firmly to the others by these
presents sealed with our seals dated the 28th day of July 1817

Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well. This indenture made this ninth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred and sixteen between Philip Branner one of the overseers of the poor for the north district
in the county of Rockingham of the one part and Mathias Snider of the county aforesaid of the
other part witnesseth. That the said overseer of the poor in pursuance to an order of the
December court of 1815 for the county aforesaid doth put and bind Delila mason poor child nine
as an apprentice to the said Mathias Snider with him after the manner of an apprentice to dwell
and serve until she shall arrive to the full age of eighteen years to learn the mystery of
housewifery. In consideration of which the said Snider binds himself to the said Branner or his
successors or overseer of the poor to teach or instruct or cause to be taught or instructed the
business of housewifery that is to say he is to teach her or cause her to be taught spinning,
knitting, sewing, and likewise to learn her to read correctly and write a good fair hand during
said term.
And moreover to furnish said Delila in good sufficient cloathing, meat, drink, washing and
lodging fit and convenient for such an apprentice.
And also at the end of her service shall pay and satisfy to the said Delila Mason twenty dollars
for freedom dues as the law directs.
In witness whereof the overseer of the poor aforesaid hath hereunto set his hand and seal and the
said Snider hath set his hand and seal the date above written

This indenture made this day of November 1817 between William Fitzwaters one of the
overseers of the poor in the county of Rockingham of the one part and Richard Custer Jr. of the
said county of the other part witnesseth that the said overseer of the poor in pursuance of an
order of the county court of Rockingham made at August court 1817 do put and bind Hnery
Mason poor child of William Mason of the said county who was eleven years old on the day of
last as an apprentice to the said Richard Custer Jr. with him after the manner of an apprentice to
dwell and serve him until he arrives at the age of twenty one years In consideration of which the
said Richard Custer Jr, binds himself to the said William Fitzwaters or his successors overseers
of the poor to teach and instruct the said Henry Mason or cause to be taught and instructed him
the said Henry Mason in the art and mystery of a gunsmith during said term and moreover to find
the said Henry Mason in good and sufficient clothes meat drink washing and lodging fit and
convenient for such apprentice and also to teach or cause to be instructed the said Henry Mason
reading writing and arithmetic as far as the rule of three and also at the end of his service shall
pay to the said Henry Mason for freedom dues twenty dollars In witness whereof the said
William Fitzwaters to the counter part of these presents hath set his hand and affixed his seal and
the said Richard Custer Jr. hath set his hand and affixed his seal on the day and year first above
