D.F. Anderson and Others, and Fifty-Five Thousand Acres of Land, More or Less, in Madison County, Virginia. This was a court case initiated by the state of Virginia in order to acquire privately held land located within the boundary of Madison County in the northern Blue Ridge Mountains. Meadows, Minnie E. Lam , Edith M. Eppard, Ella G. Meadows, Ethel Meadows, Gladys Meadows, Lorena Meadows, together with Lloyd Gruver Meadows and Plaudy M. Meadows, are all of the children of the late Elijah s. Meadows, whose name is sometimes written E. S . Meadows, who died, testate, in 1922 . That Lydia Meadows , his widow, died, intestate, on October 7 , 1934 . That Plaudy M. Meadows provided in his will that his widow, Lydia Meadows, should have a life estate in his home farm of 340 acres situated on Dean's Mountai n, and that, after her death,-- unless the sale of said land should be unanimo usly agreed to prior to that time, which agreeme nt was never entered into,-- said farm should be sold by his executo r, Lloyd Gruver Meadows, and that the proceeds derived therefro m should be divided equally amongst his nine children hereinab ove named • .An attested copy of the will of the said Elijah S. Cassandra Lawson Atkins and others, and Fifty-Two Thousand Five Hundred and Sixty-One (52,561) Acres of Land, more or less in Rockingham County, Virginia, court case initiated by the state of Virginia in order to acquire 52,561 acres of privately held land located within the northern Blue Ridge Mountains.  The Virginia government in collaboration with the federal government, used condemnation, a process that involves the seizure of an individual's private property for public use, without the owner’s consent, but with payment of compensation, and more formally known as “eminent domain,” to create the Shenandoah National Park. The documents within the collection almost entirely refer to land located within Rockingham County, but other counties within the park’s scope followed a similar process to acquire the land. There are several large outcrops of rocks on the timbered area and one or t1O of considerable size on the grazing area . The slopes are moderate to steep on the timbered area , but gentle slopes prevail on the c l eared l and . HISTORY OF TRACT ND CONDITION OF TIL'.:B=:R : This tract was acquired by L. G. Meadows in 1924, who shortly afterwards cut most of the accessible saw timber . The chestnut oak timber was cut for tan- bark about 25 years before . The timbered area has not been severely burned , but the present stand of timber on a large portion of the tract \Vill yield no merchantabla material for many years . Ln area of 156 acres has been developed as grazing land . !~st of this was cleared b~ girdling the trees and not cultivated, but a limited area adjacent to the buildings seems to have been cultivated regularly until about five years ago , leaving a rather thin soil. Title A name given to the resource Madison County SNP Records: Court Proceedings Description An account of the resource The first series in the Madison County SNP Records collection consists of 363 files related to the court proceedings from The State Commission on Conservation and Development of the State of Virginia v. D.F. Anderson and Others, and Fifty-Five Thousand Acres of Land, More or Less, in Madison County, Virginia. This was a court case initiated by the state of Virginia in order to acquire privately held land located within the boundary of Madison County in the northern Blue Ridge Mountains. Within the boundaries of eight counties, the state of Virginia, in collaboration with the Federal government, used eminent domain condemnation, a process that involves the seizure of an individual's private property for public use, without the owner’s consent, but with payment of compensation to create the Shenandoah National Park. The documents in this collection are the legal proceedings for each individual tract of land that made up the one court case. In most cases, the individual case files consist of property surveys, assessments for the value of the land and improvements, and claims by the owner of the property.
