Overseers of the Poor: Indentures of Apprenticeship
Description
An account of the resource
Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well. Active labor and semi-skilled artisan positions were reserved for males, while females often served their term learning to sew, spin, knit, or domestic labor.<br /><br />For more information on the Overseers of the Poor collection, visit the "<a href="https://omeka.lib.jmu.edu/erp/findingaids">Finding Aid</a>" tab in the menu above.

Now comes the undersig ned defendan t John Roadcap and moves the
court to decline to accept the report of the board of appraisa l commission ers heretofo re filed in this proceed ing, with respect to
claim #307, and to disappro ve the findings of fact therein containe d,
on the followin g grounds :
That the allowanc e or award made for the land of the said John
Roadcap , to-wit, the sum of $1890.00 , is grossly inadequ ate - so in
adequate as to indicate that said board was affected or influenc ed
by some error, mistake or misappr ehension of facts as to the identity
of said land, or some mistake of law as to the nature and effect of
the evidence conside red.
The defendan t John Roadcap feels that he should be allowed the
sum of $4,000.0 0 for his property aforesa id; and rather than accept
a lesser sum, he would prefer for his land to be excluded from the
park area sought to be condemned in this proceed ing.
The affidav it of the undersig ned and of one John F. Wagner are
filed herewith in support of this motion.
Septemb er 29, 1932.
Virginia, City of Harrisonburg, to-wit;
Aia d:~h~~

Wagner personally appeared before ma,
~ ' a notary public in and for the City of Harrison-
burg, in the State of Virginia, and after being first duly sworn, on
his oath says that he is a resident of Port Republic, va., and is familiar with the trucking farm of John Roadcap, lying within the bounds of
the area sought to be condemned for the Shenandoah National Park;
that said land is in an excellent state of cultivation, being peculiarly adaptable for the gwowing of toma.toes; that in affiant's opinion,
said land is the best trucking farm on the west side of the Blue
Ridge Mountain; that from 20 to 25 acres of said farm is excellent
trucking land and is worth from $90.00 to $100.00 per acre; that besides the good trucking qualities of said land, it contains a good
supply of cement sand and moulder's sand, that affiant believes the
whole of said land with improvements to be conservatively worth j3400.00.

The first series of <span>the SNP Records collection consists of 4,756 documents related to The State Commission on Conservation and Development of the State of Virginia v. Cassandra Lawson Atkins and others, and Fifty-Two Thousand Five Hundred and Sixty-One (52,561) Acres of Land, more or less in Rockingham County, Virginia, court case initiated by the state of Virginia in order to acquire 52,561 acres of privately held land located within the northern Blue Ridge Mountains. </span> The Virginia government in collaboration with the federal government, used condemnation, a process that involves the seizure of an individual's private property for public use, without the owner’s consent, but with payment of compensation, and more formally known as “eminent domain,” to create the Shenandoah National Park. The documents within the collection almost entirely refer to land located within Rockingham County, but other counties within the park’s scope followed a similar process to acquire the land. The documents are broken up into three categories: Deed Books, Miscellaneous Documents, and Condemnation Cases. This collection contains the Condemnation Cases.<br /><br />For more information on the Rockingham County Shenandoah National Park collection, visit the "<a href="https://omeka.lib.jmu.edu/erp/findingaids">Finding Aids</a>" tab in the menu above.<br /><br />I<span>n the 1970s and 1980s many of the individuals displaced by the park creation were interviewed in hopes of preserving their stories.
