                    <text>This indenture witnesseth that I James Quinn one of the overseers of the poor for the county of
Rockingham agreeable of an order of court to me directed, July court 1795 doth by these
presents put and bind Bethewel Williams a base born child who was formly bound to Robert
Samples, to Archibald Rutherford for the term of five years to learn the art and trade of a
gunsmith, to serve him as an apprentice in the said county and state of Virginia, which time the
said apprentice his said master shall faithfully serve, his secrets keep, his lawfull commands
everywhere obey he shall do no damage to his said master, nor willfully suffer it to be done by
others, he shall neither buy nor sell, fornication he shall not commit, matrimony he shall not
contract, at cards, dice, or any other unlawfull game he shall not paly, with his masters goods or
the goods of others whereby his said master may receive damage, he shall neither haunt taverns
or ale or playhouses, but in all things behave himself as a good and faithfull servant or apprentice
out to do.
In consideration whereof the said master shall provide sufficient meat washing and lodging for
such an apprentice, during the said term to leave him to read and write and cypher through the
rule of three, and at the expiration of a term pay or cause to be paid all freedom dues customary
or as the law directs. In witness whereof we do bind ourselves to each other interchangeably by
these presents unto with ourselves and dated this 25th day of October 1795

                    <text>This indenture made the thirty first day of August one thousand eight hundred and sixteen
between Aaron Solomon overseer of the poor for the northwestern district of Rockingham
County of the one part and Henry Overly of the same county of the other part witnesseth. That
the said overseer of the poor in pursuance to an order of the court of the county aforesaid held at
the April term last, doth put and bind Betsey Underwood aged five years old the first day of
April one thousand eight hundred and sixteen to Henry Overly as an apprentice with him to
dwell after the manner of an apprentice to serve the said Overly until she shall arrive to the age
of eighteen years to learn the art trade and mystery of Housewifery that is to say the said Overly
is to teach or cause to be taught the said Betsey Underwood, sewing, spinning, knitting, cooking
and during the said term and also the said Overly is to teach or cause to be taught the said Betsey
Underwood English reading correctly, writing a good fair hand and arithmetic through the single
rule of three.
And moreover to find the said Betsey good sufficient meat, drink, washing and lodging fit and
convenient for such an apprentice during said term.
And also at the end of her service the said Overly his heirs executors or administrators shall pay
and satisfy to the said Betsey twenty dollars being the freedom dues allowed her by the court.
In witness whereof the overseer of the poor aforesaid and the said Overly have set their hands
and seals the day and year first written

                    <text>This indenture made the first day of May 1819 between Stephen Harnsbarger an overseer of the
poor of the county of Rockingham of the one part and David Lair of said county of the other part
Witnesseth that the said Stephen Harnsbarger overseer of the poor as aforesaid, by virtue of and
order of the court of the aforesaid county bearing date at the April court 1819 have put placed
and bound and by these presents do put place and bind Betsey Pool orphan of Price Pool of the
age of ten years old the 27th day of January 1818 to dwell from the date of these presents until
the said Betsey Pool Shall come to the age of eighteen years according to the act of the General
Assembly in that case provided. During which term of time the said Betey Pool shall well and
faithfully serve the said David lair according to the best of her ability and shall honestly and
obediently behave herself towards the rest of the family of the said David Lair, who on his part
doth for himself and his exrs and administrators promise and covenant with the aforesaid
overseer of the poor and his successors for the time being and to and with the said Betsy Pool
have her taught the craft and art of a spinster after the best manner she can be taught and all that
thereunto belongeth and that the said David Lair shall also find and allow her sufficient meat,
drink, apparel, washing, lodging, and all other things needful for her during the said term
aforesaid and also that the said David Lair shall teach or cause to be taught to the said Betsy Pool
reading and writing and will moreover pay to the said Betsy Pool the sum of twenty dollars at the
expiration of the aforesaid term in witness whereof the parties to these presents interchangeable
set their hands and seals this day and year first above.

County Virginia pursuant to an order of court directed to an overseer of the poor, dated
December court 1815 do out and bind Catharine Mason a poor child of Mason born the 1st April
1811 apprentice to Frederick Long to learn her to knit sew and spin (and to give her for freedom
dues twenty dollars lawfull money to serve him until she arrives at the age of eighteen years,
during which time the said apprentice her said master faithfully shall serve his secret his secrets
keeps, his lawful commands every where obey, he shall do no damage to her said master, no

                    <text>This indenture made this 31 day of August in the year of our Lord 1805 between Peter Nicholas
and overseer of the poor in the county of Rockingham of the one part and George Shaver of the
same county of the other part witnesseth that the said Peter Nicholas and overseers of the poor as
aforesaid by virtue of an order of the court of the said county bearing date the November court in
the year of 1803 have put placed and bound and by these presents do put place and bind Caty
Baggs a mulattoe girl born of a white woman of the agree of three year to be an apprentice with
him the said George Shaver and as an apprentice with him the said George Shaver to dwell from
the date of these presents until the said Caty Baggs shall arrive to the age of eighteen years
according to the act of the General Assembly in that case made and provided. By and during all
which time and term the said Caty Baggs shall the said George Shaver her master well and
faithfully serve in all such lawful business as the said Caty Baggs shall be out unto by her said
master according to the power wit and ability of her the said Caty Baggs and honestly and
obediently in all things shall behave herself towards her master and honestly and orderly towards
the rest of the family of the said George Shaver. And the said George Shaver for his part, for
himself his executors and administrators doth hereby promise and covenant to and with the said
overseers of the poor and every of them their and every of their ex, and adm, and their and every
of their successors for the time being and to and with the said Caty Baggs that he the said George
Shaver shall and will instruct and teach or cause to be instructed and taught the said Caty Baggs
knitting, spinning, and housewifery after the best manner as much as thereunto belongeth or in
any wise assertaineth And that the said Geoge Shaver shall also find and allow unto the said
apprentice sufficient meat drink apparel washing lodging and all other things needful or nect for
an apprentice during the said term and will moreover give unto the said apprentice a new suit of
cloathes and the sum of twelve dollars at the expiration of the said term. In witness whereof the

and forty two between Abraham Byrd overseer of the poor for the 1 district of the county of
Rockingham of the one part and Benjamin Strickler of said county of the other part witnesseth
that the said Abraham Byrd overseer of the poor as aforesaid by virtue of an order of the court of
the aforesaid county bearing date the 17 day of January 1842 have put placed and bound and by
these presents do put place and bind Charles Armsted Ashby of the age of fourteen years and
seven months to be an apprentice with him the said Benjamin Strickler to dwell from the date of
these presents until the said Charles Armsted Ashby shall attain the age of twentyone years

which time and term the said Charles Armsted Ashby shall the said Benjamin Strickler his said

also find and allow unto said apprentice sufficient meat drink apperrel washing lodging and all
other things needful or nect for an apprentice during the term aforesaid and also that the said
Benjamin Strickler shall teach or cause to be taught to the said Charles Armsted Ashby reading
writing and common arithmetic including the rule of three and will more over pay the said
Charles Armsted Ashby a horse worth fifty dollars with new saddle and bridle at the expiration
of the aforesaid term in witness whereof the parties have interchangeably set their hands and

                    <text>This indenture made the twentheth day of July in the year of our lord one thousand seven
hundred and eightee
Between John Rush one of the overseers for the county of Rockingham parish of the one part and
Willom Gul blacksmith of the parish aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that when as a court
held for Rockingham county July the twentieth it was order that the overseers of the poor should
bind out a child named Charls Ireslon. This indenture therefore witnesseth that in compliance of
all above I the said John Rush one of the overseers as aforesaid do hereby bind out the said
Charls Ireslon to the said Willom Gul to serve him from the date hereof till he ba of the age of
twenty one years during which time the said Charls Ireslon shall faithfully honestly and truly
serve his master all his low full commants [illegible] obey he shall not let nor suffer any damage
to be done to his said masters goots without giving him notice nor shall he at any time absent
him self from his said masters service without leave but always as true and honest serdent out to
do serve his said master diligently honestly and truly during the said term
In consideration of which service the said Willom Gul doth covenant grant and agree to and with
the said overseers in behalf of the said Charles Ireslon to provide goot and wholesome meat
drink washing and lodging with linery and wollen and wollen clothes fitting for apprentice and to
teach him to cause him to be taught to read write and cypher as fore as the rule of three and to
teach him the art and mistery of a blacksmith as fore as he knows and at the expiration of the said
term to give him the usual allowance according to low sealed and delivered in the presence of
Robert Cravens

Thomas Hopkins overseer of the poor for the south district in the county of Rockingham of the
one part and Alexander Graham of said county of the other part witnesseth that the said overseer
of the poor in pursuance of an order of court bearing date at September court last doe put place
and bind Christian Donovan a poor boy of said county being ten years old the 23 day of June last
past as an apprentice unto the said Alexander Graham to dwell with and serve him until he shall
arrive to the age of twenty one years
In consideration whereof the said Alexander Graham doth bind himself to the said Thomas
Hopkins his successor overseer of the poor to teach or instruct or cause to be taught the said
Christian Donovan the art and mistery of a saddler within the time above mentioned and to
furnish the said apprentice with meat drink and lodging fit and convenient for such apprentice
and to teach or cause him to be taught to read and wright and common arithmatick including the
rule of three and at the end of his apprenticeship shall give unto said apprentice all such freedom

                    <text>This indenture made the 19th day of June 1871 Between J G Runion overseer pf the poor for
Franklin Township in the county of Rockigham of the one part and J H Detamore of the other
part Witnesseth that the said overseers of the poor by virtue of an order of the county court made
at the June court in the year 2872 has placed and bound and by these presents doth place and
bind Daniel Franklin Detamore of the age of 15 years Son of Margaret J Detamore to be an
apprentice with him the said J H Detamore to dwell form the date of these present until the said
Daniel Franklin Detamore shall arrive at the age of twenty one years of age according to the act
of the General Assembly in that case made and provided for and during all which time and term
the said Daniel Franklin Detamore shall the said J H Detamore well and faithfully serve in all
such lawful business as the said D F Detamore shall be out unto by said J H Detamore according
to the power wit and ability of the said D F Detamore and the said D F Detamore honestly and
obediently in all things behave towards the said J H Detamore and honestly and obediently
towards the rest of the family of him the said J H Detamore. And the said J H Detamore for
himself executors and administrators doth hereby promise and covenant to and with the said
overseer of the poor and his successors in office for the time being that the said apprentice shall
be instructed in the craft and occupation of farming which he the said J H Detamore now useth
after the best manner that he can or may teach instruct and inform or to be taught instruct and
infored as much as thereunto belongeth or in any wise assertaineth and that the said J H
Detamore shall also find and allow unto the said D F Detamore sufficient meat drink apparel
washing lodging and all other things needful or nec for an apprentice during the term aforesaid.
And will moreover pay to the said D F Detamore the sum of one hundred dollars at the
expiration of the aforesaid term.

it was ordered that the overseers of the poor should bind out a child named Danpary Ireslon. This
indenture therefore witnesseth that in compliance of the above order the said John Rush one of
the overseers as afore said do hereby bind out the said Danpary Ireslon to the said Peter Miller to
serve him from the date hereof till she be of the age of eighteen years during which time the said
Danpary Ireslon shall faithfully honestly and truly serve his master all his lawfull commants
gladly obey she shall not let nor suffer any damage to be done to his said masters goods without
giving him notice nor shall she at any time absent herself from his said masters service without
leave but always as a true and honest servant ought to due serve his said master diligently
honestly and truly the term
In consideration of which service the said Peter Millon doth Covenant grant and agree to and
with the said overseers in behalf of the said Danpery Ireslon to provide goof and wholesome
meat drink washing and lodging with linen and woolen and woolen clothes fit for an apprentice
and to teach her or cause he to be taught to read and sew knit and spin and at the expiration of
said term to give her the usual allowance besites three pounts

                  <text>Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well.
