Witnesseth that the said Abraham Byrd overseer of the poor as aforesaid By virtue of an order of the court of the aforesaid county bearing the date June court 1843 have pit placed and bound and by these presents do put place and bind David Knave a white boy of the age of 12 years the 8th day of May last, to be an apprentice with him the said Jonas Kenady and as an apprentice with him the said Jonas Kenady to dwell from the date of these until the said David Knave shall attain the age of twenty one years. That pursuant to an order of the court of the county aforesaid held at the December term last doth put and bind David Shutter nine years old the twentieth day of December last past to the said John Burkholder as an apprentice with him to dwell and serve until he shall arrive to the age of twenty one years, to learn the art trade and mystery of a cooper. In consideration of which the said John Burkholder binds himself his heirs executors and administrators to the said Solomon or his successors overseers of the poor to teach or instruct or cause to be taught or instructed the said David Shutter the art trade and mystery of a cooper during said term and more over to find the said David Shutter in good sufficient cloathing, meat, drink, washing and lodging fit and convenient for such an apprentice. And also to teach or cause to be taught the said Shutter to read English correctly, to write a good fair hand and arithmetic through the single rule of three during the time of his apprenticeship, and at the end of his service shall pay and satisfy to the said Shutter twenty dollars, that being the freedom dues allowed by the court. And further the said Burkholder agrees with the said Solomon to pay or cause to be paid out of his estate to the said Shutter additional sum of thirty dollars. Title A name given to the resource Rockingham County Overseers of the Poor: Indentures of Apprenticeship Description An account of the resource Series III is comprised of Rockingham County Indentures of Apprenticeship, which were formal contracts created by the overseers to bind poor or orphaned children to a "master" with who they would learn a trade. Their term generally lasted until the age of twenty-one for males and eighteen for females. Trades were typically determined by the apprentice's sex as well.
