Harnsberger personally appeared before me , F.Flavia Converse, a Notary Public in and for the City aforesaid, in the State of Virginia, in my City aforesaid, and, being duly sworn, deposes and says: I am the owner, along with the heirs at law of M. M. J9.rma11, deoeased, of a mineral interest in approximately 236 acres of land situate upon the western slope of Huckleberry Mountain, a spur of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about three miles east of the Town of Elkton, Virginia. This land is located in what is generally recognized as the manganese ore-bearing belt on the western slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The land in question is about three miles north-east of the Rarnsberger mines at Elkton, and the same has been pa:rtially prospected, and a good grade of manganese ore has been found to exist therein. The chief difficulty in the development of said property in the past has been the difficulty in transporting the ore to the NorLAW OFFICES folk and Western Railroad. This difficulty has now largely been GEO. S. HARNSBERGER HARRISONBURG , VA. removed on account of the good roads and the development of 21'\ �--2--motor trucks. This land is believed to contain manganese ore of a high grade and in oommeroial quantities. Affiant presented his claim before the Board of Appraisal Commissioners and along with said claim a plat showing the land in whioh this mineral interest exists. The Board of Appraisal Commissioners made an investigation of said land. ~lthough said Board was shown the ore-pits and the ore taken therefrom, and although there was no denial of the fact that said lands were ore-bearing, the said Board has refused to make any allowance whatsoever therefor. of ~ffiant askes that his rights and the rights the heirs at law of M.M. Clifton Aylor and others, and Thirty-Seven Thousand Four Hundred (37,400) Acres of Land, more or less, in Rappahannock County, Virginia. Clifton Aylor and others, and Thirty-Seven Thousand Four Hundred (37,400) Acres of Land, more or less, in Rappahannock County, Virginia. This was a court case initiated by the state of Virginia in order to acquire privately held land located within the boundary of Rappahannock County in the northern Blue Ridge Mountains. Within the boundaries of eight counties, the state of Virginia, in collaboration with the Federal government, used eminent domain condemnation, a process that involves the seizure of an individual's private property for public use, without the owner’s consent, but with payment of compensation to create the Shenandoah National Park. The documents in this collection are the legal proceedings for each individual tract of land that made up the one court case. In most cases, the individual case files consist of property surveys, assessments for the value of the land and improvements, and claims by the owner of the property.
