This was a court case initiated by the state of Virginia in order to acquire privately held land located within the boundary of Madison County in the northern Blue Ridge Mountains. D.F. Anderson and Others, and Fifty-Five Thousand Acres of Land, More or Less, in Madison County, Virginia. This was a court case initiated by the state of Virginia in order to acquire privately held land located within the boundary of Madison County in the northern Blue Ridge Mountains. Within the boundaries of eight counties, the state of Virginia, in collaboration with the Federal government, used eminent domain condemnation, a process that involves the seizure of an individual's private property for public use, without the owner’s consent, but with payment of compensation to create the Shenandoah National Park. The documents in this collection are the legal proceedings for each individual tract of land that made up the one court case. In most cases, the individual case files consist of property surveys, assessments for the value of the land and improvements, and claims by the owner of the property.</text>

Clifton Aylor and others, and Thirty-Seven Thousand Four Hundred (37,400) Acres of Land, more or less, in Rappahannock County, Virginia. This was a court case initiated by the state of Virginia in order to acquire privately held land located within the boundary of Rappahannock County in the northern Blue Ridge Mountains.

The documents within the collection almost entirely refer to land located within Rockingham County, but other counties within the park’s scope followed a similar process to acquire the land.

<text>The Oversized Miscellaneous Materials (Series VCCA006) form part of the Virginia Court Clerks Association Records, a collection spanning 1894–2023 that documents the professional and institutional history of Virginia’s clerks of court. This series contains bound volumes of annual convention minutes (1910–1953; 1954–1961), executive committee minutes (1993–2003), photograph albums, and scrapbooks recording association gatherings such as conventions, banquets, and training events. Full-size newspapers and clippings from 1960, 2005, and 2015 provide contemporary coverage of clerks’ legislative initiatives, organizational milestones, and the public profile of the VCCA. The materials highlight the association’s role in fostering professional development, building collegial networks, and shaping policy within Virginia’s judicial system. Originally collected and maintained by the VCCA Historian, these oversized records were digitized as part of James Madison University’s Histories along the Blue Ridge (HBR) project to ensure long-term preservation and researcher access.</text>

The documents within the collection almost entirely refer to land located within Rockingham County, but other counties within the park’s scope followed a similar process to acquire the land. The documents are broken up into three categories: Deed Books, Miscellaneous Documents, and Condemnation Cases. This collection contains the Condemnation Cases.<br /><br />For more information on the Rockingham County Shenandoah National Park collection, visit the "<a href="https://omeka.lib.jmu.edu/erp/findingaids">Finding Aids</a>" tab in the menu above.<br /><br />I<span>n the 1970s and 1980s many of the individuals displaced by the park creation were interviewed in hopes of preserving their stories. The documents within the collection almost entirely refer to land located within Rockingham County, but other counties within the park’s scope followed a similar process to acquire the land. The documents are broken up into three categories: Deed Books, Miscellaneous Documents, and Condemnation Cases. Bio/Historical Note

Every city and county in the Commonwealth of Viginia has a three-member Electoral Board, which ensures fair, free, open
and transparent elections. The Electoral board for each city and county then apppoints election officers, who serve as the
adminstrators of polling sites and ballot collectors. County and City Registrars are also appointed by the Electoral board to
ensure the registration of qualified voters in the Commonwealth.

Scope and Content

There are nine different series within this record group. This first consists of voter registration books, which date from 18701952. These were broken into three divisions. There is a separate volume for white males registred to vote between 1870
and 1952, white females registered to vote from 1920-1952 and a volume for both male and female (one they were granted
the right to vote) African Americans registered to vote from 1870-1952. These forms contained information such as the date
of the registration, the persons name, date of birth, age, occuption, residnence, naturalization status and precinct transfer (if
applicable). The second series, List of Voters Registered, are loose records indicating individuals registered to vote in
specific precincts. These are seperate from the bound volumes, as the formats differ, but it is not clear how they were used
differently. Registration of Oaths is the third series. They are natuarally divided into two subseries Male Registrations (19191944) and Female Registrations (1920-1944). These were to be filed by the Registrar along with the Books of Registration.
The oath established the individuals right to register under the Constitution and laws of the state. Series four contains voter
transfer applications made to the Registrar by the individual wishing to transfer precincts. There is no information provided
as to the reason for the request. Registration Laws is a series comprised on documentation relating to the Voter Registration
Code of 1958. Certificates of Registration make up the sixth series of this record group. These were certificates used to
certify a previously registered voter could transfer to a newly established voting precinct. Information listed includes the
name, race, date of birth, age and occupation of the individual, as well as their former voting precinct. The Abstract of Votes
series is divided into subseries for Local Elections, State Elections, National Elections, Elections on Legislature, and Special
Elections. Special Elections refer to (but is not limited to) elections for Soil Conservation officers, elections on the change of
municipal government, and bond issues. General Election Records consists of various records that did not fall into clearly
into previously established series. This includes Special Election Records, Newspaper Articles, Electoral Board
Correspondences. Finally, Series nine containts Voting Precinict Petitions (1915-1931). These petitions were brought by
local individuals requesting the establishment of a new voting precinct or the revision of precinct boundary lines.

Arrangement

All series, and subsequent subseries, are arranged chronologically.
