on the 4th day of Ja nuar y, 1923 , con vict ed of violating the Prohibition laws of the Commonwealth of Virg i n ia, in the Circuit

sentenced to pay a f in e of three hundred dollars and to serv e for
a period of two months in jail, did, with in one ye ar next prior
to t he fin din g o f t his indictment, i n t h e said county of Rockingham, unl a wfully and felo ni ous ly manufacture , s el l , offer, k e ep,
store and expose f or sa le, give away, dis pense, transp ort , sol icit ,
advertise and receive orders for ardent spirits, against the
peace and d i gnity of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

And the jurors aforesaid upon their oaths aforesaid do
further present that James L. Ray, who was heretofore on the 4th
day of January, 192 , convicted of vi olat ing the Prohibition laws
of the Commonwealth of Virginia, i n t he Circuit Court of Rocking ham Cow1ty, Virginia, and who then and there was sentenced to pay
a fine of three hundred dollars and to serve f or a pe riod of two
months in jail, did, within one year next prior to the finding of
this indic tment, in the said county of Rockingham, unlawfully
and fel oniously have in his possession a still, still cap, worm,
tub, fermenter, and other appliances connected with a nd used in
the operation of a still, withouthaving the same registered as

An account of the resource
The first series of the Prohibition Records collection consists of all criminal case records associated with cases brought to the <strong>Rockingham County Circuit Court</strong> from 1916-1964. Not every individual was indicted for a criminal offense and many were simply judged as misdemeanors. The grand Jurors in and for the body of said county of
Rockingham and now attending said Court at its October term, 1927,
~pon t~pir oaths do present that J~es Ro~sen, within one year next
prior t9 the fin().ing of (this indiq-tment, !n the _said county of Rockingham, did unlawfully manufacture, sell, offer, keep, store and
~xpose for sale, give away, transport , dispense, solicit, advertise
and receive orders for ardent spirits, against the peace and dignity
of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

present that James . Rossen, within one yeaJi: ,next :prior to the finding
of this indictment, in the said c aunty of Rooking}:tam, did unlawfully
have in his possession ardent spirits, against the peace and dignity
of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
