Sampson attended Harrisonburg High School and became the area’s premier sports legend, appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated six times in less than four years. He stood at an impressive 7’4” and after graduating from UVA went on to play for the NBA. Sampson briefly helped coach basketball at JMU in the early 1990s. Both Spotswood and Sheldon were dormitories during this time, as Spotswood--originally termed “Dormitory No. 3,”--remains today. With the construction of Sheldon, all students attending the college had the opportunity to live on campus. Sheldon Hall has since been converted to offices, but was used as a residence into the 1970s.
