The Rockingham County Register of Free Negroes: Part 1 comprises of the lists and registrations of the Free Black individuals who lived in Rockingham County from 1807-1859. The entries within this document detail the free person’s name, age, gender, physical description, occupation, and the origins of their freedom. The lists within this series often note whether an individual was born free, or if they were born enslaved and often includes the individual(s) who manumitted them.
