Title

Senior Hall Parlor

Subject

State Teachers College at Harrisonburg, Senior Hall, residence hall, Cleveland Hall

Description

Parlors are ways of structuring the space inside a building to channel visitors in a certain way, rather than opening directly into living space. The Senior Hall parlor, inside of what is today Cleveland, was a formalized space with its own set of rules. Students could use the parlor to entertain guests and hosts teas. Seniors were usually extended more visitation privileges than younger students. No students, however, were allowed to “dance in the parlors.” [Quote from Listen Freshman,” Booklet, ca. 1960s.]
